It turns out a ‘sexy’ squid which had been discovered on a beach in Florida is actually an octopus.Yes, you are reading this correctly. The creature had been found washed up in Wilbur-by-the-Sea, south of Daytona Beach, on Wednesday morning.

It measured roughly 53 inches along, and had been believed to be a vampire squid, according to the News Journal Online. Now, an employee of Florida’s Museum of Natural History has identified it as a blanket octopus, a name which comes from the webbing in between its tentacles.

The creature – along with several others like sea pansies and sea butterflies – was blown ashore by wind currents directing an upwelling of colder water from deeper beneath the ocean.George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research and curator of the International Shark.

Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History, said vampire squids are a “sexy, midwater pelagic” species, adding that this particular specimen was a female.Males, he said, were basically “swimming sperm banks awaiting call from the female.”
